Cuban Print Exhibits

In July of 1962, a small group of artists lead by Orlando Suarez, a muralist whose initiative also helped found the Superior Art Institute, created the Taller Experimental de Grafica  (Experimental Graphics Studio) in the old Marques de Arco Palace in Havana.   The intention was to revive the rich tradition of print making and at the same time, engage the new revolutionary art movement by using mastered graphic skills (and scare resources) while leaving a mark on the history of graphic art for new generations of artists.

Ernesto Che Guevara, then Minister of the Industry, supported the effort and allowed the use of old print machines and graphic reproducing stones to this group of  “crazy” artists.

The Taller Grafica was born, in the middle of revolutionary artistic forces, Pablo Neruda’s poetry and good tobacco.  Soon this group of artists was joined by professionals from a publishing company, art students, and the effort snowballed into a renowned art school for printmaking and a place to experiment with new techniques by the upcoming artists.

Supported by a selected group of artists – Orlando Suarez, Armando Posse, Jose Contino, Fremez, Rafael Paneca and Jose Omar Torres, the Taller has always been at the forefront of the graphical arts.  The diversity of themes and techniques make up a collection of valuable graphic artwork.  The creative spirit of each artist is reflected in each of his or her work.

The place is like a sanctuary of culture for local artists.   Attracted by the fresh ink and the ancient sound of its printing machines, poets and storytellers, musicians, and visual artists, meet in moments of inspiration and harmony that reminiscent of early artists philosophical conversations.

The physically large doors of the San Cristobal fort open to El Callejon del Chorro seemingly cuddling artists, writers, art critics, musicians and curious people who visit the Taller.  The purity of the lithographs and other forms of graphic prints, the ancient sound of the machines, the young age of current artists, make this place captivating and enticing.  Many now have fallen in love with the Cuban “grabado”.

The Taller is more than a workshop.  It is a studio, a café, a school and most of all, an art institution that preserves and develops the sophisticated art of print making with relative freedom of spirit and form.

The art of lithography owns its beginning to the revolution.  Prior to the revolution, reproduction was merely a commercial art of producing labels and prints for merchandise.  Earlier efforts to emulate the work done by the Taller de Arte Popular in Mexico were not lasting.  It was that July of 1962 when the Taller Experimental de Grafica opened its doors on the Plaza de la Catedral and to the creativity of its artists that printmaking began to assume a prominent place in the arts of Cuba.

At ElCoquiGalleries.com we are pleased to present Cuban prints from renowned artists such as Rafael Paneca Cano, Eduardo Roca, Carlos del Toro, Alex Parra and others. Note: If a piece is sold, and you can wait we might be able to find another one, please send us an email.)
