Huichol Beaded Art - Mexico
In visiting the Field Museum of Natural History in Chicago,
I distinctly remember the resemblance of some of the Native American Indians artifacts and
costumes to their Mexican neighbors. You'll see why. Today we are pleased to
highlight one of the many Mexican Indian folk arts. |
| The Huichols Indians live in Jalisco and
Nayarit, bordering the Pacific Ocean towards the center of Mexico. They are
descendents of the Aztecs and are related to the Hopi of Arizona. Having withstood
the Spanish Invasion, they are still striving to keep their culture alive and viable,
despite the ever increasing physical and cultural encroachment of their Mexican
neighbors. The yarn and bead work are typical examples of the traditional Huichol
works of arts. |
