Model
Houses - Puerto Rico
One of the most charming collections of
artesanias (folk art) in Puerto Rico are model houses, commonly
known as 'casitas'. Artisans capture the many styles of houses
in Puerto Rico: Old San Juan Spanish buildings and
cathedrals, 'Jibaros' (country) simple wood and zinc houses from the
mountains, Mediterranean/Caribbean style haciendas, and great houses
that reflect the splendor of the educated and upper class.
Each casita or facade is hand-made and come in a variety of
materials, such as wood, crystal or ceramic. Great collector's
items! |
Following are two embossed
ceramic casitas, we'll add more to our collection soon.

Venezuelan Casitas - Venezuela
The
'casitas' or model houses have become collector's items in
Latin America. Each casita captures the essence of a village,
a historical period or a famous character. For example, the
Juan Vicente casita is a replica of this famous dictator in
Venezuela from the years 1908 to 1935 and the Simon Bolivar is a
replica of the house in which the famous El Libertador stayed in the
Andean Mountains in Venezuela that has become a Museum today.
These casitas were made in the Andean Region where artisans make
nearly exact replicas of the originals using wood, gypsum, clay and
vegetable tincture. The wood is first assembled, and later the
houses are painted and
decorated. |
