Institute and art critics have begun to recognize the value of his works. Some of his artwork is now featured at the Museo
de Puerto Rico. His children, have set

An accomplished painter and serigrafista,
original print artist, Don Manuel started like many painters, creating original prints

R
a f a e l T u f i n o Rafael
Tufino was born in 1922 in Brooklyn, New York. As a child, his
family went back to Puerto Rico and he was raised in La Perla, in Old San
Juan. The effects of the extreme poverty he suffered and saw during
the Depression, and the political situation in the Island shaped his
artistic inspiration. He's a self-taught artist that later attended
art schools. As a young boy, he started by making advertising
drawings for a local store as a way to help his family. After
serving in WWII, he returned to New York and met other famous Latin
artists like Rivera, Orozco and Siquieros from Mexico. In 1950 he
returns to Puerto Rico and forms the Taller de Artes Graficas. He
immediately became an award winning serigraph artist and
painter. He
joined the Instituto de Cultura Puertorriquena in l957 and became a master
teacher and one of the best-known paper art exponents. His art
expresses the images and scenery of the day-to-day laborer, housewife, and
children. His style is powerful, full of feelings and social
interest. His works are highly regarded by collectors worldwide and
adorn the exhibits of many museums like the Museo del Barrio in New York
and the Museum of Puerto Rican arts. At
El Coqui Galleries we are pleased to introduce some of his most famous
serigraphs, which are in very limited editions. These original
serigraphs were first created to commemorate the Calle San Sebastian
fiestas of Old San Juan.
