Meet Cuca

Cuca,  a Sonia Braga look-alike, is an artist native from Puerto Rico. Cuca’s unique works of art are made from paper mache using recycled paper and Cuca’s own "mixta especial".  The process is spiritual and meticulous, requiring patience and concentration. The final product is a lively, colorful expression of the artist. No two pieces are alike.

Red Dancer
Polka-dot Bomba Dancer. Click on picture for details. Item #FA001-PR $130

Cuca always loved to paint.  She became more serious about her art when she had children and started painting and making art works for them.  As many artisans, she is self-taught and has advanced to develop her own secret mixture of paper mache ingredients for more flexibility and durability.  Her works are exquisite in detail and reflect high levels of energy.  Each item takes several layers of preparation, and the process takes 3 or 4 weeks for each piece of art.  Her ethnic art  reflects African and Caribbean influences.
Cuca celebrates the Afro-Caribbean cultures through her works of art.  Here we are exhibiting an astonishing vejigante mini-statue, paper mache dolls and figurines, lithographs, and a fantastic golden mask of the African woman portrayed as a goddess.   Her lifelike figures pay homage to the spirit, culture and diversity of the beautiful people of the Caribbean and Africa. Her art is further inspired by her passion for the music of her native Puerto Rico.
