Claudia Garcia
comes from Colombia's Caribbean coastal town of Barranquille.
Her mother was a seamstress who served as a liaison between sick
people in their community and the indigenous curanderas or
witchdoctors. Claudia tells extraordinary tales of the bizarre
acts she witnessed when she accompanied her mother on outings to
visit these powerful healers. Claudia first saw her father at
the mother's funeral and met him three years later when she was
14.
The death of her
mother forced Claudia to live with her grandmother. When life
there became unbearable, she ran away to live with the Indians with
whom she already was acquainted. These people taught her a way
of life few outsiders have ever known.
When it came time to
attend the university, Claudia moved to Bogota. Life was hard
and she joined the clandestine operations of the communist
revolutionaries for whom she served as a messenger. Her life
was threatened many times while she was a member of the
revolutionaries. Currently, she lives in Bogota and visits the
Wayu Indians frequently to learn more about their mythology.
At ElCoquiGalleries.com we
are pleased to introduce some of her works. They all have a
strong Wayu influence and their spiritual beliefs. The
presence of frogs, iguanas and serpents relate to the animals in the
area where she lived. Each animal seems to be looked from the
inside as to trying to discover what the animal really
is. Her earth tones and brows are contrasted with blues,
greens and turquoises, like fusing the sky and the earth
together.
