Callejon
Callejon, P038-MX, $300

Repousse

Repousse Art or ‘repujados’ is the art of embossing a picture/design on a sheet of metal.  Famous in the old Spanish religious arts, repujados techniques have been practiced and taken a local flavor in Latin America.  Utilizing miniature tools, each pattern is carefully pressed onto the metal to deliver a unique design in metal art.

Inspired in a Callejon or small street, this repujado is full of details: the cobblestones, the plants, and the arched entryways.  It is a really nice piece of art by Norma Herreras and her daughter.  A new type of art for your collection

Carved Pictures

If you like carvings, you will love these pieces from Carmen Latorre.  She takes a single piece of wood and carefully carves out a three dimensional picture, usually a scene inspired of her native Puerto Rico.  The perspective of the picture make you feel like if you are right there, the colors are enticing and her attention to proportion is superior.

She studied arts at the InterAmerican University in Puerto Rico and currently teaches carving to new artisans.  The Senate and the Tourism Company in charge of promoting cultural arts have recognized her.  She exhibited at the international folk arts fair in Tenerrife, Spain

Amate

Many centuries ago, the art of writing in amate paper was probably started by the Aztecs.  Their books or codices have remained in excellent condition and reflect an incredible detailed and sophisticated writing system.

Building on this tradition, artisans from Guerrero have perfected the art of painting on amate, a highly porous sheet of paper made form the outside layers of a tree.  We are pleased to present sample of their creations.  A few symbols are common:  the Aztec Calendar, The Quetzal Birds, and the reference to ancient gods and legends.  We hope that you enjoy our amate art and Codex sample.  Their colors are exquisite.  Each is a unique expression of art and culture mixed together.  Click on picture for details and ordering.
